Why should you explore the trails in Western South Dakota?
Introduction – The Unforgettable Experience
Overview of Side by Side (SxS) Trails
Side-by-side vehicles, often referred to as SxS or UTV (Utility Task Vehicle), have become increasingly popular for off-road adventures. These versatile machines are designed to navigate rugged terrains while providing passengers with a comfortable and thrilling ride. One region that has gained significant attention among SxS enthusiasts is Western South Dakota, known for its stunning landscapes and diverse trail options.
We’ve traveled to several different places with our side-by-side and friends/family, but we generally make it to the Hills area at least once a year. There is always something new to do there and it’s great to spend time with your people!!
Black Hills National Forest
Trails and Scenic Beauty
The Black Hills National Forest is a haven for SxS enthusiasts. It boasts a network of trails that wind through dense pine forests, meander alongside clear streams, and provide breathtaking vistas of the Black Hills. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, there are trails to suit all skill levels.
Trail Difficulty Levels
The Black Hills offers trails ranging from easy to challenging. Beginners can enjoy scenic drives on the Victoria Lake Loop routes, while thrill-seekers can tackle more demanding trails like Camp Five or the infamous Limestone Canyon. The whole Western side of this state is so full of options for those of us who love a good ride!
Permits and Regulations
Before embarking on your SxS adventure in the Black Hills National Forest, it’s crucial to understand the permit requirements and regulations that are in place to preserve the natural beauty of this amazing place, as well as to keep everyone safe while they enjoy it. These guidelines and regulations are there for a reason.

Spearfish Canyon
Waterfall Wonderland
Spearfish Canyon is a hidden gem in Western South Dakota, renowned for its stunning waterfalls and lush forests. Learn about the SxS trails that take you past these natural wonders and immerse yourself in the beauty of this canyon.
Nearby Attractions
Explore the nearby attractions, including historic towns, charming lodges, and recreational activities, that make Spearfish Canyon an ideal base for your SxS adventure.
Rapid City and Surroundings
Historic Sites and Urban Adventure
Rapid City serves as a gateway to Western South Dakota’s outdoor wonders. Discover the city’s historic sites, cultural attractions, and vibrant arts scene before venturing into the wilderness.
A really fun outing, especially when you have kids along, is the 1880 Train. You can ride the train between Hill City and Keystone and back to where you started. You see a LOT of fun stuff on that train!
One MUST SEE is Wonderland Cave. It has 127 steps down into the cave, and yes, you have to climb those same steps to get out. It was AWESOME!
Lodging
There are a LOT of options for places to stay out there! There are cabins and houses and resorts. One place we really love is White Tail Creek Resort. We’ve also rented houses here and there. Lots of great choices in the Hills.
SxS Rentals and Tours
If you don’t have your own SxS vehicle, don’t worry! Rapid City offers rental options and guided SxS tours, making it easy for anyone to experience the thrill of off-roading. We’ve rented units before from a few different places and haven’t had any issues.
Nightlife and Dining
Unwind after a day of adventure by exploring Rapid City’s nightlife and dining scene. We’ll recommend some of the best places to eat and enjoy the local culture. If you’re staying near Deadwood and Lead, smaller towns but no shortage of entertaining exploits! We often buy groceries in Rapid City and cook most of our meals, to help keep costs down, because we generally travel in large groups that are not necessarily conducive to dining out.
Safety Tips and Responsible Riding
Protective Gear
Your safety is paramount when riding SxS vehicles. Helmets are not required for those over 18, yet. But you can get helmets (Rugged Radio) where you can talk to each other, pump cool air in when it’s very hot outside, and play music from your phone with Blue Tooth. We got some when we went to West Virginia to ride, as it’s required there, but honestly, I don’t always wear a helmet like I should. We also have headsets for talking to each other and music options, but they wouldn’t keep us safe in an accident. Most side-by-sides have features that require the driver, at least, to be wearing their seatbelt, which is good because you don’t want to get tossed out of one of these if you roll!

OHV PERMITS
A Black Hills Motorized Trail Permit is required to access the SD portion of the motorized trail system and when riding an unlicensed OHV on a forest road designated “open to all vehicles.” Permits are available as a seven-day consecutive pass ($20) or an annual pass ($25). Prices are subject to change.
Permits may be purchased online at BlackHillsBadlands.com/permits or any of the forest service offices.
They may also be purchased at the Black Hills Visitor Information Center, conveniently located off Interstate 90 at Exit 61 in Rapid City. The visitor center is open seven days a week, year-round, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers extended summer hours.
Please note that the State of Wyoming requires a separate permit when operating an OHV in Wyoming. There is no reciprocity for out-of-state registrations.
RULES & REGULATIONS
In South Dakota, state motorcycle law governs ATVs and UTVs.
- On-the-road drivers need a licensed OHV, must be 14 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license.
- ATV/UTV use is strictly prohibited on the interstate highway system at all times.
- Eye protection is required for ATV/UTV operators on all public roads unless a windshield is in place.
- Helmets are advised for all ATV/UTV operators and riders on all roads. Helmets are required by law for anyone under 18.
- Operators on roads must be able to provide registration and proof of insurance.
Environmental Considerations
Preserving the natural beauty of Western South Dakota is a shared responsibility. Learn how to minimize your environmental impact and contribute to the conservation efforts of these pristine landscapes. There is nothing worse than seeing people be disrespectful with their trash on these trails! For the most part, people are pretty decent on the SD trails, but we have picked up other people’s garbage before.
Trail Etiquette
Respecting fellow riders and trail users is essential. Being decent to other people trying to enjoy the same experience you are should be common sense, but don’t get me started on the lack of common sense these days! We haven’t run into anyone where this has been an issue. Most people get that we’re all here to have fun!
